Sharakan

Beside taghs and gandzes, there is also one sharakan whose authorship is ascribed to Gregory of Narek. Sharakans, unlike taghs, are canonical church hymns, included in the official Hymnal of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Below you can read the English translation of St Gregory's Sharakan of Resurrection. After the lyrics you can listen to this hymn performed by Lusine Ghazaryan and Anahit Papayan, also see the sheet music taken from the book by Nikoghayos Tahmizyan "Gregory of Narek and the Armenian Music of the V-XV Centuries" (Yerevan 1985, in Armenian).

Sharakan of Resurrection

Glory to  Christ's almighty Resurrection!
The Cherubim worship
The almighty Resurrection of Christ
And the six-winged Seraphim
Sing  in spirutal tones, saying,
- Glory to  Christ's almighty Resurrection!

Today the holy women went with sweet fragrances
And saw the angel, in sun-like radiance,
Shouting on the rock and saying,
- Glory to  Christ's almighty Resurrection!

Today we were released from the bonds of the forefather
And with the second renewal
Became inheritors of eternal life.
- Glory to  Christ's almighty Resurrection!

Gregory of Narek, Sharakan of Resurrection. Sung by Lusine Ghazaryan and Anahit Papayan.
